Review of the Oday Tempest by leon rabidou

Year built 1966
Location of boat Cape Cod Ma
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2000
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? I have basically rebuilt the boat during the last three years. Hull, Mast,Boom and Bow Pulpit are about the only remaining original items. It is a great daysailer with plenty of cockpit room and an amazing lack of weather helm even in heavy seas. I have invested enough money that I probably could have a bigger nicer boat.
Gear that's been added Three new sails, new v berth cushions, all new seacocks, new winches.new running rigging, new toilet, new tiller, new anchor, new depthsounder, new gps,new vhf,new 5hp four stroke motor and everything else you can imagine.
Structural or complex improvements All windows have been replaced with opening lemar hatches and the forward hatch has been replaced with a see through Bowmar Hatch. Last season I had the keel dropped and reseated and replaced the steel support plate for the keel. All through hull fittings and seacocks replaced.
The boat's best features Great roomy daysailer, light helm, easy to single handle, very stable regardless of sea conditions.Very good looking classic design that gets alot of attention in her restored state.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Boat takes on water though the outboard well in a trailing sea and the water seems to travel behind the seats in the cockpit.
Sailing characterisitcs I mainly use the boat for daysailing and have sailed in a variety of conditions and the boat is very stable and comfortable in all conditions.
Motoring characterisitcs I use a 5hp 4 stroke outboard and the boat motors fine at about 5 knots.
Liveability I have only stayed on the boat one weekend last year and its liveability is limited but possible.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) [builder]
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any not applicable
Other comments Great boat for daysailing.
