Review of the Oday Widgeon by Don Givler

Year built 1973
Location of boat Monroe LA
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength less than 10 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2002
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. I bought it used (boat and trailer for $650) and it is definitely worth what I paid.
Gear that's been added I've replaced a number of old and broken parts, but I have not added anything. O'Day has been very helpful. I have purchased replacement parts from them, and they sent me a copy of the original brochure illustrating the rigging.
Structural or complex improvements No.
The boat's best features It is surprisingly roomy and stable. The cockpit is high enough so that you stay fairly dry while sailing. I bought it to teach my children (ages 8, 10 and 11) the fundamentals of sailing, and it is perfectly suited for that purpose.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The obesrvation has been made that it doesn't point well, and that is true. However, I've sailed boats that were worse.
Sailing characterisitcs It sails quite well for a 12-foot boat. The jib makes it much more fun and versatile.
Motoring characterisitcs Not applicable.
Liveability It's comfortable for a few hours on a nice day, but not longer than that and not in any kind of weather.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) [builder]
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Not applicable.
Other comments It's a great little sailboat. I was looking for a Sunfish, but this was a better choice.
