Review of the Oday 272 by Richard Hays

Year built 1987
Location of boat Maryland Marina; Chesapeake Bay
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in Mary
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes; I love this boat. It does everything well, has plenty of room top and below. It is a perfect boat for this size and class. And...since it only drafts 3 feet ( winged keel ) it is a perfect boat for the Upper Chesapeake Bay.
Gear that's been added Nothing added. Came pretty loaded, other than for a kettle grill.
Structural or complex improvements None needed, although I am trying to find a place to get replacement parts for it, like hatch boards, etc.
The boat's best features Easy to sail; very stable and seemingly well made. Very roomy inside compared to others in its class. Nice cockpit area too. Good ventilation, good light in cabin.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Front hatch leaks a little. Replacing the head was a nightmare. It seems that they build the boat around it. Getting the fresh water hose to the head was horrible..
Sailing characterisitcs Light handling; steers well in a variety of conditions. Seems to point fairly well for its size, keel, etc. I'd recommend this boat to anybody.
Motoring characterisitcs I run a 10hp. Honda on it. Nice motoring characteristics.
Liveability Great! Very roomy, especially in the main cabin. Good light, Good ventilation. Non-claustaphobic. Front berth is fairly roomy, as is the rear. Only "wish" was that the bench seating in the main cabin area was more adaptable for sleeping. Good only for kids.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) [builder]
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Maryland Marina was very helpful. Nice folks.
Other comments They never should have gone out of business. Nice design. Nice features. Sails really well. I love my boat!
