Review of the Oday 26 by Tim Howe

Year built 1984
Location of boat Annapolis, MD
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew solo
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2001
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. I got it for very little, even though it had been very lightly used.
Gear that's been added I added a marine head and holding tank. I HATE porta-pottis. I added a great stereo with remote control by the tiller. I purchased a cruising chute and pole.
Structural or complex improvements Same as everyone else. Why couldnt they have stepped up just one size on the standing rigging and hardware. Penny wise... The interior design is quite good. I took one of those origo stoves - very- very fine stoves- and set it on gimbles inside of the murphy bed type storage. Works so well.
The boat's best features The interior design is very good. The pull out bed is swell. Nice cockpit. I like what it draws.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Just that the rig scares me. On the bay I have had the wind go from 6 to 40 knots in ten minutes and boy....I am not willing to risk sailing this boat in any strong blow. Thats a drag. I have another boat - an old-old-old pearson 22 that I love to sail in t-storms.
Sailing characterisitcs Its a great luxurious sail on a nice cruise. I have an auto tiller and Im fond of the cooler in cockpit...oh sailing you mean. It pushes well downwind, as would be expected and in winds to 15 - it points fine...after that I dont know...I need a second reef...cause this boat just swings over at 20 knots and no matter how small I make the foresail, its overpowered.
Motoring characterisitcs My last boat this size had an atomic four and it was a smoky vision of the nuclear apocolypse. I lived through it, but I felt dirty and ashamed. Outboards may not look as 'sporty' but at this boats size- its 100 times better. Dont let anyone tell ya different. The boat swings when you move the angle of the motor and I have inside the cockpit controls - and so theres not much bending. Also props in the water slow one down - so much!
Liveability It looks like it was made in 98. The wood below is pretty, the cushions look classic (the blue) and I have decorated quite extensively. A kind of humorous pirate theme seems to of developed below.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) [builder]
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any I got it from a motor boat dealer- who just wanted the space..I was sublimely lucky.
Other comments I would not have considered this boat except for the price. But I do like it. I am not planning an UP move...Though I will asap replace all the standing rigging and cap the rudder as another owner suggested. But it is for a modern boat, well lined. And down below, all those J boat sailors that I know who spent 20 to 30 times what I did, are envious. Especially if they are 5'8" or shorter!
