Review of the Oday 27 by Bill Houck

Year built 1977
Location of boat ft.myers.florida
The boat is sailed on Open ocean
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? Yes
Owner bought the boat in 2000
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Would do it all over again if had too, maybe I just got lucky but found a great deal on a great boat.Gentleman and his wife lived aboard her "Albatross" for about 8 years before I came along. Boat has been from Conn. to Yucatan, Mexico and sails like a witch still.
Gear that's been added Built more storage Hanging lockers and such, Installed A/C unit and refridgerator, and microware for "roughing it @ port or switch to inverter while we are out on the hook.
Structural or complex improvements No real structural improvements but just upkeep or repair of standard items. Found it best to leave most things as they were.
The boat's best features Her sailing ability is great. can cruise in light air easily and is up to most gusts in most conditions while using working sails.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Nothing that o'day installed or built has been a problem (so far) just minor electrical or electronic updates or repairs is all I have actually done.
Sailing characterisitcs 20-25 knot gusts often occur in the river in late afternoon here headed toward the gulf and can be quite intimidating for a person not used to a sudden "rails in the water" sailing day
Motoring characterisitcs motoring with the atomic four has been great and find it sufficient until need to be replaced arises.
Liveability has been perfect to live aboard "Albatross" enough room for comfort but keeps it tight for reminding you what does'nt belong on a boat.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) [builder]
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Luckily bought "Albatross" from a friend who is a broker so it was a good thing all the way around.
Other comments would recommend O'day boats highly, and have always received good comments from other boaters who ask the inevitable..."what kinda sailboat?"
