Review of the Oday 20 by John Hippe

Year built 1974
Location of boat Lake Michigan
The boat is sailed on The Great Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew solo
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2000
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes.
Gear that's been added Boom vang. 4:1 purchase on main sheet.
Structural or complex improvements Replaced all blocks with Harken. Beefed up chainplates. Put backing plates behind all deck hardware. Added genoa tracks.
The boat's best features Simple. Easy to single hand as long as one does not need to go to the bow. Boat will tend to self if steady wind and close haulded with tiller lashed. Otherwise reqires constant attention. Everything can be managed by one person, from raising mast to sailing.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. My rudder broke in 2000. Built new rudder. Sails were original. Replaced jib with Sailrite kit jib which has improved sail drive. Jib has reefing points which have been useful in heavy air. Will be building new main this winter. Difficulty pointing at present. Generally only able to point approx. 55-60 degrees off wind (asertained through GPS heading, thus includes leeway). In heavy air (30-38 kts) unable to do much more than beam reach with reefed main. This is probably due to age and condition of main.
Sailing characterisitcs Everything from 1/2 knot to 38 knot winds; flat seas to 6-8 foot waves. The boat love a close reach and beam reach. Short chop is somewhat difficult but otherwise does well. Off the wind it can get somewhat squirelly with following seas wanting to slew the stern around but close eye on seas can compensate (2-8 ft seas). Leeway is an issue.
Motoring characterisitcs No motor.
Liveability Have gone on week long cruises 3-4 times up coast of Lake Michigan. Livability is camping. Cramped but doable for one person. More than that would be too cozy.
