Review of the Oday 30 by Michael DeNicola

Year built 1978
Location of boat Port Jefferson NY
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2000
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, this is our first sail boat and it was a very good boat for what we paid. Have had no problems at all. Any problems were taken care of by previous owner. love the boat sails great and is very forgiving. Wish the cockpit were larger.
Gear that's been added New stero, DGPS, live lines, added suerlock rope cluches and new halyards. Refinshed all wood work in and out. we will re do the cushions this winter and add hot water heater
Structural or complex improvements No just refinished all wood work and counter tops
The boat's best features The boat sails great and is very forgiving even in 4 to 5 foot seas. I feel very save in it. has a lot of room for 4 people for a weekend or even a week or more. easy to dock.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The motor could be larger but have had no problems with it had to re place bilge pump, and re seal one port window.
Sailing characterisitcs We have sailed it in all types of conditions for less that 5 knots to over 30 knots and 5 foot seas. It can take anything the long island sound can give. Have sailed it 50 miles in high winds and rough seas. A little slow down wind but will use the spinnaker next year.
Motoring characterisitcs The boat needs more power. we have a 12 HP works great never had a problem but would like more power in current or high wind. easy to dock backup.
Liveability Its find for a weekend or a week for 4 people. The cockpit is too small
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) [builder]
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any The broker did everything they said they would do and more. I would recommend them anytime. They were fair and did not up estimates once as we had a few thing fixed before we picked it up.
Other comments It is a great boat for a family, not a race boat but you can have a lot of fun and learn a lot without getting into trouble. Wish they were still in business.
