Review of the Oday 27 by Scott Chausee

Year built 1976
Location of boat E. Greenwich, RI
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Racing
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew 5-6
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1996
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Uummm, no I would not.
Gear that's been added Extensive replacment of all the gear. Solid Boom Vang (Garhauer),Custom made traveller across the cockpit. Back Stay adjuster, New winches (4), Adjustable Genoa sheeting cars with tracks install next the cabin. Wind Speed indicator and Depth sounder. All lines run aft to cockpit. Duel life lines. New halyards and running rigging.
Structural or complex improvements Yes, I've reinforced the chain plates (fore and aft lower stays. Drilled and filled the decks on both sides for structural failure. Have to do some more this winter on the bow area. The mast and boom have been refinished and painted. All the wiring has been replaced.
The boat's best features Ease of handling. Nice headroom.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Theres nothing that dosent work anymore, I've replaced it all. The factory installed interior lights were really bad and were the first to go. The boat leaked a lot from the top side. The stanchions are really bad and there no reinforcment area below them. I'm planning on cutting the head liner to install a much beefier backing plates.
Sailing characterisitcs She handles waves very well. We've sailed in 25-30kt winds with just the 100 up and did over 7kts. With a new main sail added (made with MAX roach) the boat just performs perfectly. Downwind performance is good. Under spinnaker it can be tricky because the boat is so light. With an ASYM Spinnaker she flys.
Motoring characterisitcs The atomic 4 has been great. Fresh water cooled and looks like crap from all the rust on it, but runs great none the less. Having a bit of trouble with the tranmission slipping this year though.
Liveability TOO SMALL, and no shower so sayith the wife.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) [builder]
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any
Other comments Mostly I've enjoyed working on her and fixing her up. Most sailing we do is racing and an occasional daysail. The overnighters we did do were all disasters mostly because of the weather but other than that it was a bit to crowded aboard for our family. Looking to move up :)
