Review of the Oday 22 by Tyler Johnson

Year built 1973
Location of boat North carolina
The boat is sailed on Rivers
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength less than 10 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2002
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, I have found it a great boat to learn on and the shoal draught keel makes in easy to sail where I live. I like the size and the money I have in it over other boats.
Gear that's been added Yes a lot. I got the boat in dis-repair and it needed a lot. I have modified the mast step and made the mast strong and better handling. I added new cam-cleats and all new haylards and control lines. I have a spinnker and all it's control gear. VHF,CD,more cabin lights and mast lights. All saftey gear and depth sounded. All new berths and interior panneling in teak. All new paint(inside and out and bottom).
Structural or complex improvements Yes. Stronger mast step...old pin-style step welded to the center of a 1'x1' 3/16 alummium plate then through bolted to a matching plate. New interior bulkheads and removal of interior cabinet and toliet. Shoal keel supports and re-fiberglassing inside.
The boat's best features Ok sail plan and decent rudder.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Needs a little more ballast and deeper keel profile. Hull thickness is quite thin and the port lights(windows) are poorly built and leak like crazy. I removed them and put a new custom type in and sealed it with 3M's 5200. That was the only way to stop the water.
Sailing characterisitcs They are better than other 22's I have been on... even a Catalina 22!! Works good all the time. The best time was 15 knots downwind spinnker action surfing the swells. The only boat better is the J22, in the waters I sail.
Motoring characterisitcs The 7 1/2 horsepower Chysler is the right power to weight ratio.
Liveability I took out a lot of stuff and the livabilty is down. I took it to an island of the coast and stayed in a hotel at the marina.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) [builder]
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any I brought in a dudes back yard.
Other comments It will be for sale in the spring of 2003 and I will miss it very much!!
