Review of the Oday 19 by STEVE LUNN

Year built 1972
Location of boat LAKE ONTARIO
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew solo
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1997
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? USED 22 FT ODAYS ARE READILY AVAILABLE AND ARE USUALLY REASONABLY PRICED. THIS BOAT IS EASY TO SAIL BUT CERTAINALLY NOT A HIGH PERFORMANCE BOAT. THIS IS DUE TO THE CONCESSIONS MADE TO TRAILERABILITY, NAMELY THE SHOAL DRAFT KEEL.NEWER ODAYS HAVE DROP KEELS TO MAKE UP FOR THIS "SAILING TO WINDWARD" DEFICIENCY. I HAVE FOUND THAT IN SAILING CLOSED HAULED HEADWAY IS ABOUT EQUAL TO LEEWAY. ALL OTHER POINTS OF SAILING ARE REASONBLY EFFICIENT HAVING SAID ALL THIS YES I WOULD BUY THIS BOAT AGAIN
Gear that's been added YES, REWIRING, NEW LINES, ELECTRONICS AND LOTS OF ELBOW GREASE
Structural or complex improvements NO, THIS BOAT ( 31 YEARS OLD )IS EXPERIENCING NORMAL DETERIORATION BUT IS STRUCTURALLY SOUND.
The boat's best features EASY TO TRANSPORT AND STORE, EASY TO SAIL AND MAINTAIN.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. I HAVE NOT HAD ANY SERIOUS PROBLEMS
Sailing characterisitcs STATED ABOVE
Motoring characterisitcs MOTORING SEEMS TO BE ACCEPTABLE. BE CAREFUL NOT TO RUDDER INTO MOTOR
Liveability MINIMAL BUT ADEQUATE FOR ONE NIGHT OR WEEKEND
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) [builder]
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any BOUGHT FROM INDIVIDUAL
