Review of the Oday Mariner by marcus n

Year built 1975
Location of boat Highland Park, IL
The boat is sailed on The Great Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2002
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Absolutely. She is pretty, solid, responsive, forgiving and nothing but fun and learning.
Gear that's been added Not really, just a mount for a fishing rod holder. Havent used it much yet, but hope to catch a solmon or two this summer. Also replaced the hoses for the cockpit drain. they looked old, and I was concerned they might leak as they are below waterline.
Structural or complex improvements Havent needed to. The boat is relatively simple.
The boat's best features Easy to sail and very forgiving. It's trailerablilty is a great plus for driving her to new waters. Over all She's beautiful and relaxing once on the water (until the wind blows 15+, then she sails and even planes on occasion). She could be sailed easily single handed, but I usually take a friend, and often any one (or more) of my three kids and wife. Great family comfort. The long cockpit is exceptional for this size boat, making it very comfortable for daysailing, with plenty of room to keep crew out of the way when needed (not true on any other boat of it's size that I've sailed on).
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. I do have a leak (topside) somewhere, and suspect the rubrail/hulljoint. Hopefully I'll take the time to fix it before next winter.
Sailing characterisitcs Easy going. Have been able to practically beach her, change crew, and get off again with no problem. I think she draws only about 12" with CB raised. Also, I love the original jib. I'm not sure why, but everytime I get the jib flying, it's more pretty than the last. The proportion of it, the shape it takes...
Motoring characterisitcs Use a 4HP Nissan long shaft. It's been more than enough motor to power her head into 20mph wind.
Liveability Small. Havent spent a night in it yet, but hope to this summer.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) [builder]
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Bought from an individual
Other comments I really enjoy the passion that other Mariner 19 owners have and share on the Oday Mariner Yahoo group. Check it out if you have any general or specific questions about this truly wonderful family daysailer with overnighting (albeit small) accomodation.
