Review of the Oday Javelin by David Peabody

Year built 1973
Location of boat Duxbury, MA
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2000
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, a very solid boat that lasts longer than most other big name manufacturers.
Gear that's been added Motor mount, new mast, boom, stays & lines.
Structural or complex improvements New self-bailer installed.
The boat's best features Solid construction, yet very versatile in heavy seas with high winds.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Water accumulates in the hull area and its difficult to drain while under way.
Sailing characterisitcs Quick response for a heavy boat.
Motoring characterisitcs I use a 4hp Mercury w/standard shaft. Anything larger is diffucult to stow and too heavy to sail with.
Liveability N/A
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) [builder]
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any N/A
Other comments Excellent starter boat. I'm upgrading to a 22.
