Review of the Oday Tempest by Brad Sutton

Year built 1969
Location of boat Kansas
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength less than 10 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2000
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. It is a great boat on which to learn to sail.
Gear that's been added CD Radio/Speakers, battery, modified the trailer to help with loading the boat. I recently added a fan in the motor well (it's a 2 stroke motor) as the exhaust fumes in the well build up to where the motor can't "breathe" if you happen to be going down wind. Fan has made a big difference.
Structural or complex improvements None needed except for the modification to the trailer.
The boat's best features Large cockpit, storage under the seats, sails toward the wind quite well, motor cover protects it from the weather and locks it tight.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. It's pretty much a daysailer. My wife and I have slept in it overnight but it's crowded for two in the V-berth. Plenty of room for a single person but tight for two.
Sailing characterisitcs Sails to all points well, except downwind.
Motoring characterisitcs 6 hp is ok. We've gotten caught out in a couple quick forming storms that we had some trouble making way against the waves under motor with 6. Otherwise, it's plenty of motor for the boat. My next motor will be 8-9.9 HP.
Liveability One person would do ok as the interior on ours is sparse. Two people is pushing it. No headroom.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) [builder]
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Bought the boat through Lake Perry Yacht & Marina and I would do business with them again and again.
Other comments Great daysailer or boat to learn on.
