Review of the Oday Mariner by Joe

Year built 1968
Location of boat Cutchogue, Long Island, New York
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 23-30 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2002
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? maybe, After racing sunfishes for 6 years. I decided enough was enough. So we sold our sunfishes and found this oday mariner for sale at a good price. It was only 1500 and it is definatly worth more. All it needed was some cleaning and varnishing and a small amount of work to the keel. But now that i have the boat and its in great condition and i constantly sail it. but in the rough waters around where i live it leaves alot to be desired. I regularly sail in winds over 30 knots and the boats upwind performance in anything above 12 knots is terrible. Although it is a great boat and is easy to trailer, and sail. i think it would be better suited for calmer waters of a less intense bay or a lake. In the near future i plan to sell it off and buy a boat that performs a little better upwind and has a little more cabin.
Gear that's been added No.
Structural or complex improvements during a failed attempt to get the boat on its trailer the keel wasnt raised completely and it became stuck. i soon relized this. i screamed stop, my dad heard go and the hook on the bow of the boat was ripped out leaving a nice hole. we took it to a fiberglass repair shot adn he fixed it up for under 200 dollers. also recently we struck a rock near shore and since then the cabing occasionally fills with up to 6 inches of water. but after that it levels out. so at the end of the season we are have to going 2 fix that.
The boat's best features its downwind performance. with a spinnaker up and a nice beeze the boat easily planes out and flies downwind sometimes topping out at as much as 20 kph!.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc.
Sailing characterisitcs poor upwind great downwind
Motoring characterisitcs it motors great and does about 8 knots with a 5 horse
Liveability the cabin is small and has a 2-3 feet of headroom so u have to crawl. although it is possible to install a water tank i wouldnt recomend living on this boat.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) [builder]
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any
Other comments overall its a pretty good boat, but leaves alittle to be desired upwind. It is a great day sailer and if you are interested it is for sale. I live in cutchogue, Ny. 11935. the phone number is 631 734 5974. we probably wont b home so leave a message.
