Review of the Oday 25 by J. Hayes

Year built 1978
Location of boat Chestertown , Md./
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1999
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Probably
Gear that's been added Totally rewired. Patched damaged transom.
Structural or complex improvements Yes!!! Changed form a 9.9 Johnson Sailmaster to a 8 H. P Yamaha 4 stroke. The heavier 4 stroke engine has re quired a compltete rebuilding of the transom at great expense to the management. Beware of 4 strokes on older O'Day models.
The boat's best features Relatively easy to handle. The old 9.9 Johnson weighed a ton and was diifcult to pull up on the high transom. Would have preferred an inboard. The new Yamaha has a power lift and will be great if we ever get the tranosm finished.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. See comments on the outbord anove.
Sailing characterisitcs Would like a self furling jib. All else O.K.
Motoring characterisitcs See above.
Liveability Generallyy good for a boat that size. The main cabin bunks are a little narrow.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) [builder]
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Bought form a loacl dealer. Good experience. He knew sailboats. Had a survey BEFORE making offer. This drove the dealer crazy but worked for me.
