Review of the Oday 27 by Steve Hart

If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yup...this is my second Oday...had a 22.  
Gear that's been added New Orego stove, a Dikenson propane fire place, pressure water system, holding tank and all the goodies that make it work and not stink..then the wish list gets longer...  
Structural or complex improvements Re-bedded all the deck fittings to stop the deck leaks..then put that dang holding tank in  
The boat's best features Tweety loves to go. She will sail well in light air or a gail. My wife, our 16-year-old daughter and I spent 3 months living and traveling on this little ship and had a blast. Broke the whisker pole in a 34 knot down wind run pushing 8.5 knots through the water. Our friends ran for cover with their 37 footer, but Tweety held the water and danced with the 8-foot seas.  
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. She is a 26-year-old boat that lives year round in the ocean. I think she may have a small blister on her but...oh ya...the deck leaked...some one thought it a good idea to seal it with silicon...I fixed that idea.  
Sailing characterisitcs Tweety is a forgiving boat...sails better by far, than any of the past boat we have owned. She needs new sails...I think these ones are or are close to original sails so any problems with sailing was due to the sails rather than the design of the boat.  
Motoring characterisitcs Tweety's "Iron Sail" is a Farymann 9 horse diesel that is raw water-cooled. It was installed in 1976 and may have been rebuilt in 1996. This little fart never skipped a beat in about 300 knots of motoring this summer...but it shakes everything including the water around the boat. It can be hand cranked in a pinch (and has been a time or two). This is great when the kid leaves the lights on all night or the starter key falls overboard. I sometimes fantasize about a Yanmar or universal but I can never fantasize up enough cash. Therefore I have the best motor money (mine) can buy.  
Liveability Outstanding! Well at least once and a wile one of us was (standing out side). We spent three months in the belly of the beast and that was a blast...My wife over packed a bit on clothes (hey she admits to this). She also found that she had plenty of space to put things. We had 29 footer and it didn’t have the usable living space that Tweety has. We three sailed all summer and could have kept going as we never felt uncomfortable.... but you might if you like lots of personal space.
