Review of the Oday 25 by Scott Stinson

Year built 1978
Location of boat Vashon, Wa.
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2003
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes
Gear that's been added Plan on re-doing cabin cushions ( $$$ ), inside wall fabric, sink area, etc. Overall I like the layout and construction of the O'Day. I've owned 2 previous Catalina 22's, but like this boat better on deck and below. She seems well built being 25 years old. No leaks to speak of so far above and below !
Structural or complex improvements Next spring if all goes well. The Tiller definitely needs to go as the old one could break soon. Will replace some other small parts needing attention like a few pulleys and sheet blocks, but nothing too big.
The boat's best features Cabin size, deck configuration is especially nice for a 25 footer. As a family of 5 we felt very safe on board "Solamar" sailing on Puget Sound.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. I am concerned about the combination of battery, fuel tank, and water all stowed below the cockpit in the same space. I will look into re-doing this and maybe moving 1 or 2 of the above elsewhere. Are all these boats set up this way ?
Sailing characterisitcs As mentioned by others, you need to watch the tendency of the boat to sail on her own even without sails when docking. The high freeboard catches the boat and you can be fooled as to your manouvering.
Motoring characterisitcs My 10 YO 8 HP Tohatsu works great! ( 2 Cycle )
Liveability DNK yet, but looks good for weekends on Puget Sound.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) [builder]
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any
