Review of the Oday 22 by Dennis Gelber

Year built 1979
Location of boat Hudson River - Newburgh Bay
The boat is sailed on Rivers
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength less than 10 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1996
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? yes
Gear that's been added New motor, new main and genny, new sail cover, cockpit cushions, and a lot of small stuff.
Structural or complex improvements Replaced standard mainsheet with a traveler. Replaced chainplates
The boat's best features very easy boat to single hand. Does not pound in a chop. small sail plan handles a 20 kt breeze. Boat sails to its PHRF number (279) if you know what you are doing. First place in the CYC small cruiser fleet 2002 and 2003.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. In 8 or 9 years of sailing, nothing serious has failed on this boat. A traveler and a boom vang are critical to make this boat sail to its number.
Sailing characterisitcs Boat is very stable. Only got green water in the cockpit 2 or 3 times in 8 years. Boat will round up in the heavy puffs. Be ready to spill wind out of the main in puffs over 20. (not the jib)Boat does not point well but on a reach or run it often stays with the so called "hot boats"
Motoring characterisitcs Boat goes hull speed at 3/4 throtle with a 6 HP Evinrude.
Liveability Boat is a great day boat or weekender but to small for long cruises.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) [builder]
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any bought from private owner
Other comments Oday made a great boat. If an Oday 23 came along at the right price I might move up.
