Review of the Oday Tempest by Rick Evans

Year built 1968
Location of boat Port Washington NY
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew solo
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2002
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, But I would have gotten a more thorough survey. I also would have gone to see the boat in person before purchasing her. I bought the boat long distance.
Gear that's been added Harken lazy jacks, jib downhaul, main downhaul, New jib sheets and jib halyard, new tiller bracket and tiller, tiller tamer.
Structural or complex improvements Yes despite the survey I purchased when I received the boat there was massive delamination of the cockpit floor. I had the entire floor recored and reglassed. Which cost me almost as much as I paid for the boat, which pissed me off and taught me a lesson in boat buying.
The boat's best features The larg cockpit and the Rhodes design. My previous boat was a 27' hunter, This smaller boat is so much faster more nimble and much more fun to sail. She really shocked me with her speed and handling characteristics.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The hatch going below has massive leaks which allows rainwater to permiate the cabin I need to fix this problem very soon.
Sailing characterisitcs She sails well on all points very close to the wind and well balanced. Downwind she would benefit greatly from the installation of a boom vang as on a run the boom despite being sheeted on the back of the boom still allows the boom to raise during wind shifts and gusts resulting in the sail loosing its shape and spilling wind.
Motoring characterisitcs My johnson 6hp two stroke is adequate if the seas aren't too rough and the wind is under 15knots, but in a blow motoring into a headwind it could use at least an 8 probably a 9.9 to be safe.
Liveability I wouldn't live on her but shes ok for the weekend, but make no bones about it you are camping for the weekend.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) [builder]
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any I didn't
Other comments For the amount of years she has been in the water she is in excellent shape. And for her size she is unbelievably sea worthy
