Review of the Oday 23 by Mark Reiland

If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes.  
Gear that's been added Type 27 house battery New Battery switch Raytheon ST40 knotmeter Uniden 206 Depthsounder Uniden Oceanus VHF Radio Rule 500gph Bilge Pump (3) new fender lines New 12 Gang Electrical Panel two new cabin lights. Two new PFD's All new Safety equipment (2003)  
Structural or complex improvements 1)Repaired starboard aft stanchion base, recore, refiberglassed and gel-coated it. 2) Complete re-wiring of entire boat. *ugh* 3) New bottom paint spring 2004  
The boat's best features Roomy enough for my family. Cabin is nicely laid out. Cockpit is large enough . Ideal in size for learning, yet good enough for weekends of cruising along Lake Michigan.  
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc.  
Sailing characterisitcs Sails very nicely. Hanldes well in 5-12 knot winds. 15-20 knot winds, I've noticed the boat likes to round up. Very little weather helm though (so far). when board is down, she points nicely and rudder responses are good. Does take some muscle to control the tiller. Currently not set up with singlehandling in mind. No halyards are fed aft to the cockpit. Boat at this time (June 2004) does not have roller furling yet. Need to set up for singlehandling to ensure better, safer methods of lowering or raising the sails or sail changes. (wifes wants me to stay in the cockpit more often instead of going forward *LOL*)  
Motoring characterisitcs very good when motoring along. Boat is quite responsive when turning or handling in 3-4' waves. Will have to modify set-up, so I can turn rudder and motor at the same time. Found rudder makes contact with the motor and prop when rudder is turned to starboard too much.  
Liveability Will be suitable for weekenders with small family or two guests. Might be tight for longer cruising excursions but could be made easier when moored or docked with the pop-top up.  
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) [builder]  
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any nope., I got the boat for a hell of a deal! Previous owner wanted $2,500.. After not getting any bites, I waited till the price dropped and after some 12 months later, price was at $1,200. I bought her at that price.  
Other comments A truly enjoyable boat to sail! Can't say enough about the Oday!
