Review of the Oday 240 by Eric

Year built 1988
Location of boat Mystic, CT
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2003
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. Price was right, and workmanship/seakindliness is very good. Private seller was great.
Gear that's been added no.
Structural or complex improvements Below deck,I have removed the table around the mast compression post increasing overall room for lounging. It made a big difference in liveability.
The boat's best features Ability to be sailed solo. Seaworthiness. Room below decks. Enclosed head, cutaway stern, shoal draft, swim ladder, and ventilation.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Traveller for the main sail sheet is mounted just in front of the cabin bulkhead. This leads to warnings for new crew to avoid serious finger pinches. repeated warnings are needed. In addition, genoa sheets cross the cockpit over the main sheet requiring some "dropped" mainsheet action on the part of the skipper when coming about. overall, this is easily handled after a bit of experience.
Sailing characterisitcs Windchimes sails well on all points of sail. The wing keel tends to limit up and down motion in chop. She pounds into weather with the motor running, she does not pound going to weather under sail. On a reach and down wind she is a perfect lady.
Motoring characterisitcs Windchimes cruises along just fine. I have a a 1997 Yamaha 4 stroke outboard with alternator and electric start. vVery reliable. The motor has a 25 inch shaft and does not cavitate except in tight turns.
Liveability Amazing headroom for a craft this size. Berths are comfortable, and the enclosed head is an added bonus. Fresh water tank and a stove complete the picture. The unique use of space for a removable cooler is indeed welcome.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) [builder]
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Bought from Private seller. Good experience.
