Review of the Oday 28 by Mike Glover

Year built 1980
Location of boat Great Lakes - Lake Huron
The boat is sailed on The Great Lakes
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1997
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, but... and there always seems to be a but. I would find a boat with a diesel engine and not the OMC sail drive. But I would buy her again.
Gear that's been added Dodger, self installed. Auto Pilot (st4000), self installed. Stereo sound system with cockpit speakers, self installed. Hot water at the dock, self installed. Replaced hard plastic fresh water tank with a "bladder" type tank.
Structural or complex improvements No
The boat's best features Wonderfully roomy main salon. Generous quarter berth. Roomy lazaret. Very comfortable cushions. Nice stiff boat, points well, tracks well close hauled. Feels stable.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. A fair number of spider cracks. probably due to age. The ice box and sink are in a terrible location. 12 volt lights in the salon are weak and none in the quarter berth. The hanging locker is very small.
Sailing characterisitcs Stiff. Points well. Tracks well. Rounds to weather from 15 knots of wind on up. At that point the first reef is a MUST. Then she sails like a dream. Never put in the second reef. Probably winds +30 knots would need that.
Motoring characterisitcs Herein lies the rub. Saildrive! Rather OMC 2-stroke. Loud! Stinky! Smoky! Did I say loud? Loud! The engine is dependable, backs up well and will drive the boat at her full hull speed . But it is a gas hog, is out dated and you gotta' mix the fuel and oil at fill up time.
Liveability Comfy is the best word to describe it. For a 28' boat nice and roomy for two. Weekends, long weekends, a week or two. But not a long tem live aboard.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) [builder]
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Seemed OK.
Other comments She sails slow but she is steady.
