Review of the Oday Daysailer by Axel Caro

Year built 1984
Location of boat Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1985
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Probably, I would look for a stronger boat for the sailing conditions prevailing there, and the trailering through fair roads, necessary to get to good sailing places.
Gear that's been added No
Structural or complex improvements No
The boat's best features Easy sailing with a boat that rides nicely.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. 1- The serious water leaking through the centerboard pivot. This part is weak by design and any lateral stress on the centerboard cracks the hull in the pivot recessed space. Moreover, it is a very difficult place to get in, through the floor caps. At the end, this problem was corrected by reinforcing the inside of the hull with fiberglass and epoxy. 2- The self bailing valve is located at the back end, just where the hull hits the floor during wrong trailer handling, for instance. By doing this, I broke two, since it has no protection whatsoever. I previously owned a French made sailboat ("Caravelle") that had the bailing valve protected by a prolongation of the transom. 3- The lifting mechanism for the centerboard was cumbersome and I had to replace the lines twice.
Sailing characterisitcs Nice day sailing, but always with the concern of how much water the boat was taking.
Motoring characterisitcs none
Liveability I did not use the boat for more than day sailing
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) [builder]
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any As you may have seen, I imported the boat to Dominican Republic through a dealer in Florida. It was a smooth operation and I received telephone advice and received replacement parts when necessary.
Other comments I no longer have the boat since I had to move to Spain. I sold it in 1989.
