Review of the Oday Javelin by Ralph Fowler

Year built 1974
Location of boat Cumming Ga
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength less than 10 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2005
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? So far I have had the time of my life with it.
Gear that's been added No.
Structural or complex improvements After experiencing a trip of 10 to 15 mph wind and breaking a starbord shroud, which also broke the 29" rizer, I turned the rizer over and clamped the broken chip with a hose clamp and am redrilling the other end of the rizer.
The boat's best features The Javelin has a great ability to experience fairly large waves and not upset unexperienced sailers or their passengers. The Jib really inhances the speed making it a delight to learn to sail.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The drain on my 1974 was damaged and I used a rubber hose that fit and plugged the drain from the inside of the boat. The standing rigging had a strand of wire broken (starboard )and under 15 mph winds, broke.
Sailing characterisitcs With extremely few hours of experience, (4) at 7 to 10 mph wind, I became a expert and with the next 2 hours , found what it means to do 10 to 15 mph winds. The ability to come about at 15 with gust becomes very touchy and several times I did not make it until I concentrated on speed before manuver. With waves at 3 feet (Lake Lanier), I never took on water. However the deck was awash a few times.
Motoring characterisitcs We use a trolling motor to investigate the many islands on lake Sidney Lanier (untill replacement shrouds are here). Beware, the wind must be measured to use a 12v trolling motor.
Liveability The Javelin was not made for comfort and I use a Coleman portable chair that fits perfectly in the bottom of my boat. The Wife loves the chair and we may get a outboard to go on longer excursions
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) [builder]
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any I bought the boat from a individual.
Other comments Being a Park Attendant and living in a RV with travel as a norm, the javelin was a means of learning to sail. A dream of many years. No way to drag a larger boat, but will place mast and boom on top of 30 foot 5th wheel and move on.
