Review of the Oday 23 by S. Cantino

Year built 1980
Location of boat Carlyle, IL
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2005
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Absolutely, looked long and hard for an O'day and was convinced the shoal draft was the way to go. Originally thought about a Catalina 22 but after comparing the two was sold on the 23.
Gear that's been added Not much, but have several projects planned. Will add some deck hardware, a bimini, audio and a furler. Solo sailing is a definite and some of the planned additions will get me there.
Structural or complex improvements None, but plan to strip and repaint the bottom during the off season. Would like to modify storage to accomodate gear.
The boat's best features A solid boat, handles well in heavy weather. Feel comfortable sailing in conditions that make most stay at home. Have bent her to 30 degrees and she pops back up, no problem. Adequate room down below.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Chainplates leaking. Sloppy rudder hardware. Plan to address these and perform annual maintenance. Rebedding seems to be a requirement.
Sailing characterisitcs New sails would help, the old Neil Pryde sails do the job but a furling headsail and crisp new main would be an improvement. The first shakedown sail proved to be an eye opener. 2 to 3' waves on an inland lake with an occasional one breaking over the bow made for an interesting day. Sailed under the main only until things quieted down and then enjoyed the rest of the day. The ability to sail in thin water is a plus.
Motoring characterisitcs The four stroke 7.5 Honda moves it well enough. Only use it to get in and out of the marina.
Liveability Can sleep two comfortably for an overnighter or two. Don't think I could spend a week on it unless I was alone.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) [builder]
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Purchased from a broker. Ok experience but wasn't impressed with the service. They justed wanted to move a boat they inherited from the previous owner of the dealership.
Other comments Like the fact that there is a strong association of O'day owners who provide support and knowledge. Hope some day to move up to larger water and a larger O'day. Can't think of any place I rather be than out on the boat.
