Review of the Oday 302 by Joe Walworth

Year built 1988
Location of boat Michigan
The boat is sailed on The Great Lakes
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2005
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. The boat is a fine value. I purchased with a 30 day full systems warranty and after a 194 mile shake down, did not need to use it.
Gear that's been added Boat was set up nicely but I added GPS, C/D player and replaced marine radio.
Structural or complex improvements None.
The boat's best features For me, it is a great value on a sturdy boat. The look of the boat is generally a love/hate thing. I like it because if you know boats, you know your looking at an O'day when it goes by. It is bright and comfortable inside. I have a cold plate in the ice box which keeps things very cold. All lines lead aft so it is easy to handle from cockpit.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Honestly, have not had a single thing break or not work properly. But keep in mind, I've only owned the boat for one season.
Sailing characterisitcs I've had full sails up in 20 knot winds. Boat needs a decent breeze to reach it's potential. 10 to 15 knots is perfect.
Motoring characterisitcs The Yanmar works fine. I've used it for 20 hours non stop without a problem. It is loud down below but who cares. During a 194 mile trip, I slept in the aft berth right next to the engine.
Liveability Decent sized bunks. Says you can sleep six but four is just right. Plenty of storage, shower, stove, oven , pressure water.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) [builder]
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Purchased the boat from Irish Marine in Harbor Springs Michigan - specifically from Rod Rodgers. He is no longer with this company but was excellent to work with. Very happy with his services.
Other comments Just a nice boat. If your considering a 30ft boat and have the opportunity to look at a 302, check one out.
