Review of the Oday 22 by Peter Anoia

Year built 1975
Location of boat Virginia Beach, VA
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew solo
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2005
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Absolutely, but that's only if no longer have this one, and I'll hold on to it even if I have another, bigger boat.
Gear that's been added So far, I've only added a 135% genoa to the inventory, but I plan to add a genoa tracks to accomodate the larger sail. Hopefully I'll soon devise a mainsheet traveler beside a 3/8" line between the stern cleats, which I also want to upgrade to something more substantial.
Structural or complex improvements None.
The boat's best features Solid and simple. I feel like I can beat it up a bit so that makes it good for beginners, too. Also, I feel safe. It does not seem uncomfortably tender but still responsive when sailed well.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Having some problem with the sidestay chainplates. They don't seem to anchored very well in the particle board bulkhead so there is some lifting that has occurred on one side.
Sailing characterisitcs Like I said, it is solid and responsive so it's a real joy to sail. It is simple so it's an easy sail single-handed. I learned on an Oday so it was a natural buy and has just felt good for me. Perhaps I could get better pointing ability with a centerboard but the shoal draft keel is worth the simplicity (this seems to be a theme).
Motoring characterisitcs Actually I don't have a motor. But I will say I remember from years ago how well a 9.9 gets it going...woohoo.
Liveability Kinda cramped but I did it for two weeks on a solo cruise.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) [builder]
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Broker--he was helpful to this college student, and I have no second thoughts about the deal.
Other comments Thirty years old and still going strong...working on the next thirty.
