Review of the Oday 23 by Geoff Gruender

Year built 1980
Location of boat Lake Champlain
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew solo
Liveaboard? Yes
Owner bought the boat in 2006
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Absolutly! I think I got very lucky in my choice of a first boat. A little small for a liveaboard, but with the retractable keel
Gear that's been added Where to begin??? I'm still in the very early stages
Structural or complex improvements I don't think I really need to. The 23 is well thought out for it's limited space. My only temptation is to use one side of the salon as a counter/workbench/storage locker instead of a sofa/berth.
The boat's best features EASE OF USE! Even with almost no experence setting
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Silly rope locker for the anchor is WAY too small. And that dratted plastic chemical toilet next to my bed... Any suggestions?
Sailing characterisitcs Lake Champlain in the VERY early spring, frost on deck w/the strangest winds.
Motoring characterisitcs None. Untill I am forced to on the locks and canals when I am fleeing winter I would rather just have my 50lb thrust trolling motor. It has served me well and w/no fuss or muss. And it is free (solar) as well as silent.
Liveability I touch cramped only because I'm 6'1". But other than headroom, she's perfect with only 1 person. With 2, you had better get along well!
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) [builder]
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Interesting... The marina I found her was a VERY posh place were the next smallest was at least 35 feet AND they were all top of the line new boats. Sort of like getting a nice used minivan at a Rolls Royce dealership. However they were very nice
Other comments She was unnamed when I got her and I found that strange. Now shes 'Serenity'
