Review of the Oday 27 by Lee Hunt

Year built 1976
Location of boat Ghost Lake Alberta
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2001
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes i would buy an O'Day 27 again as she is a good all round boat. I base this on having sailed many boats from 12' to 38'. The 38' was a Hans Christian sailed from Kawai to Port Hardy on Vancouver Island, in Canada.
Gear that's been added Nothing new added yet.
Structural or complex improvements I have problems with delamination on the port side deck that will eventually have to be fixed. I may just put new chain plates down the outside of the hull as that is the strongest, simplest and cheapest way to remedy the problem.
The boat's best features The O'Day 27 is a bit large and heavy on land and trailering but it can be done. She really belongs on the ocean or a huge lake but the small lake I have will have to do.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. All is well on Cat's Paw
Sailing characterisitcs Cat's Paw is real nice for sailing in most any kind of wind as she is heavy. Maybe a bit slow in light wind but when mother nature blows Cat's Paw really shines
Motoring characterisitcs Great with the Atomic inboard. Cat's Paw manovers with ease. The Atomic is a good, reliable work horse.
Liveability She lives well as the interior has all the basic stuff needed to be comfortable and I can stand up in the cabin which is real sweet on a smaller boat. O'Day did a real good job when they designed the 27 as there is lots of storage for a 27' boat.
