Review of the Oday 27 by Jim Rossi

Year built 1976
Location of boat Cleveland Ohio (Lake Erie)
The boat is sailed on The Great Lakes
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2002
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? YES! It sails great in all weather. Solo or crewed. I have a 170 that makes this boat move very well in 1-2 knots of wind. With the small sails up it will sail itself when set right(which is good when you have to go below to refill a beer). I have been out in bad weather on trips to Erie and Lake Huron and the boat has sailed great. The Atomic 4 has plenty of power and lets me motor with the 30 footers in rough seas with no problem.
Gear that's been added New Tiller. Reefing. 2nd Battery. Crew. Wish it had 3 more gallons in the fuel tank.
Structural or complex improvements Deck leaks. Soft spots. Fixed with new glass. Repainted deck with Rubberized paint DURABAK 18 (cote-l industries) keeps all the water out but very hard to keep "clean" might be because of the color(beige) Rebedded toe rails(never again) Rudder was wobbeling, fixed it with a thin brass collar. New stainless rudder cap to replace worn brass one. Front hatch needs to be rebuilt, bad crack in it. Would like to add a traveler for main, any ideas would be helpful.
The boat's best features
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Rudder cap should never have been made out of Brss. I really wish there was a traveler for the main. The engine compartment is a dream for working on the engine. Bilge pump has finally worn out (manual)
Sailing characterisitcs She sails great in all wind conditions. There is no furling system, but There is a storm jib, 100, 150,170. The 170 is great for light air or off the wind. She tracks great. the small sails allow for heavy air sailing. Shes a good club racer in Jam.
Motoring characterisitcs
Liveability The wife complains. Will not travel on the boat for long sails. I have no problem with it. When we stop at ports for the nite there is always facilities there to use. A frig would be nice but the draw on the electric is a trade off. At 5'5" the head room and berths are fine.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any)
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Private owner
Other comments It is one of the best older 26-28 foot older boats I have sailed on.Everybody who has sailed on her has praised her handeling etc. If I ever move up to a 30' my first look will be at a ODAY.
