Review of the Oday Widgeon by Dylan P

Year built 1984
Location of boat NC/VA
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Racing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in It w
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? I would accept it as a gift again, yes.
Gear that's been added Re built rudder. Rudder is off of bigger boat. Looking into cutting it down to proper size. New main halyard; wasn't necessary but new lines are pretty and fun. Apparently there are quite a few Widgeons on their second rudder due to loss at capsize. New spreaders.
Structural or complex improvements I left the mast up while loading her onto trailer, my mistake, forestay blew off mast. Three metal screws are holding up well. I figured I'd try that before through bolting. Only on the fore stay though. The shrouds needed bolts as the aluminum rivets were coroded.
The boat's best features She's a wonderful little tub. Maximum seating area for her size. Have stood on bow rail under sail, I am 210 lbs., plenty of room for learning and can heel way over without flipping (yet). Simple sailing dinghy. Make great tender for 50 + ocean cruiser, or power yacht.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. I broke a block on the boom because I over loaded it. I was never shown how to properly rig her. The drain plug is an awkward size. I use wine corks a lot. Nothing major. Nothing that wasn't my fault.
Sailing characterisitcs I like breezier sailing. I don't think she's as bad to weather as some reviews but I have limited experience. I like to heel her and put the rail in the water. She does not want to go over. It is easy to spill the main although I have almost gone over to lee this way with everyone scrambling.
Motoring characterisitcs HAHAHAHA
Liveability One could conceivably sleep in the bottom in a protected cove. I have considered this but not tried it. We took her camping. She didn't like the extra weight in the middle.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any)
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any
Other comments A wonderful boat.
