Review of the Oday 34 by Josh WIethop

Year built 1984
Location of boat lake hartwell
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew solo
Liveaboard? Yes
Owner bought the boat in 2006
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? There couldnt be a better boat in the size range for the year era, with exception of the endeavour 35, which I like but Id still keep my Oday being shes well equiped, yes Id buy this boat again in a heartbeat.
Gear that's been added Auto pilot, two gps systems, all new wiring and plumbing, 17k btu heat and air, extra water tank, 4 golf cart batteries for house bank, truecharge 40 amp charger with panel, solar charging with wind generator on the way, dodger, double bimini, repowered engine, list goes on
Structural or complex improvements Doesnt need any, oday did a great job on this boat
The boat's best features The spacious interior, layout, deck layout, sailplan, just a great boat, I looked at a new beneteau similar in size one day and i dont see it being worth 100k more than this.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. only gripe was the lexan hatchboards, not much for privacy at night when backed into a slip, so I made new teak ones cut to the same deminsions so I can mix and match or go solid
Sailing characterisitcs boat was prone to halyard wrap but i put a fairlead on the mast to lower the angle of pull on the jib halyard, fixed, easy on my own.
Motoring characterisitcs could damn near kneeboard behind this thing though she does squat after 6.1 knots, but motored at 7.5 once, with room left but i didnt want to stress the engine, its had a newer 3cyl kubota put in.
Liveability great for myself or when i have a guest, my niece slept well in the quarter berth and anytime the gf is here we are fine in the v berth
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any)
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any none
Other comments I love this boat, it was a fluke that I got it, it was a boat from usauctions that was storm damaged but it was only superficial. bow rain and rub rail. Catalina direct is a good source for bow rails and taco now has a cream colored rub rail with a 3/4 in stainless insert, man that looks classy on this boat instead of that black insert. but i got it cheap but it was meant to be
