Review of the Oday 25 by Thomas Akin

Year built 1975
Location of boat South Portland Maine
The boat is sailed on Open ocean
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2002
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Probably not. I say that with some qualification. The main selling point with this boat was that it came with the trailer, and the whole rig was $3500. I spotted some soft spots on the deck and figured it would be easy to fix... Two years later it was done. While it is strong and safe, the repairs took away two years of sailing I cannot get back.
Gear that's been added Auto-pilot, outboard.
Structural or complex improvements Recored 20% of the deck, new gas tank, gas filter, new tiller with brackets for the auto-pilot, repaired table, rebedded everything forward of the cockpit, new halyards, rewired everything. Painted the entire exterior of the boat. Had to rebuild trailer as well and added a 10 foot removeable extension to the hitch so I wouldn't have to dip the end of the truck into the ocean when launching. All in all, way too much repair and modification work.
The boat's best features Man is this boat strong! Very comfortable for two adults and perhaps two children. It's just well thought out for the amount of space avalable.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Most of the equipment was 30 years old so it's not a valid thing to complain that things broke.
Sailing characterisitcs Give the sails are sacked out, not too bad. Points terrible, mostly because of the baggy sails. This boat is idiot proof however. You just can't get into too much trouble.
Motoring characterisitcs Very manuverable with outboard.
Liveability As before, two adults can be quite comfortable.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any)
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any So so.
Other comments Alota work and still not done. Need to replace the whole head system, compass, and add roller furling. I wish I had a bigger boat, but I'd have to do the repair thing all over again and it's just not worth it. ( Or bring lots more $ )
