Review of the Oday 23 by Bob Burns

Year built 1983
Location of boat Atwood Lake Ohio
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew solo
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2005
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Oh Ya !
Gear that's been added The boat was well equiped with everything you would ever want, when I bought it.
Structural or complex improvements Not yet. I am thinking of replacing the motor mount this winter. I wnat a "lift assist" system built in to help get the motor out of the water while I'm sailing.
The boat's best features The design. My previous boat was a Catalina 25, full keel. My O'Day 23 handles as stable as the 25 did, but so much easier to handle and dock. Plus, on a strong heal there is very little pressure, on the tiller, to round up. I actully have to watch and not force it too much, on a heal, because at times I've felt she could go right on over !
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Nothing yet.
Sailing characterisitcs This is the first boat that I can say, that can keep up with me ! I enjoy, what I call "Extreme Sailing" I like a good 10-15 mph wind (or better) where she is on her side and the white water is flying ! This boat will handle it all and not beat you up during those times !
Motoring characterisitcs I have an Evinrude 9.9 hp. the moves the boat just fine through the water. But, if I had the boat on Lake Erie, or a larger more open water lake, I might want maybe a 12 hp. back there.
Liveability No this area ........ Eeeeee. I got used to the interior room, of my prievious 25, so going down in size has been a bit hard. And, as in most boats, the beds are hard as hell ! (But maybe its just me getting older !) But I do like the interior lay out on the 23. It has everything you want, or need, and all nicely organized. Plus, I have a rule about sailboat interiors ...... I have to have a boat where I can sit on the port a pot, without suficating and where not everyone else in the marina can see me standing with my pants down !!!! LOL .... So, yes, the head are has some privacy !
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any)
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any I bought my boat from an individual.
Other comments Well so far, this has been boat number four in my life, and she is the best boat yet. The O'Day handles with the stability of a bigger boat for being 23'. And has just wonderful lines and that "Sexy Sailboat" look. And also, is simple in the rigging layout, which is a big help in spring launching and fall haul out, and beinging home for the winter storage. I couldn't be happier with this boat and wished I could have gotten one a long time ago.
