Review of the Oday 240 by clint wood

Year built 1989
Location of boat Illinois
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2006
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? yes, great boat.
Gear that's been added
Structural or complex improvements
The boat's best features carpeted hull liner. It keeps the interior cooler by adding insulation. When a leak develops it can easily be traced and it is easy to replace wiring.I also like the way the cooler is built into the galley.I much prefer a cooler over a ice box.construction quality,I have yet to find any exposed core material around hardware that I have rebedded.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The large plexiglass windows. Both sides are cracked around the trailing edge, however they do not leak. The rudder has the same draft as the keel. So extra care needs to be taken to prevent a grounding especially in areas with rocky bottoms.
Sailing characterisitcs
Motoring characterisitcs Very easy to maneuver in and out of the slip. The boat can be steered with the rudder and outboard at the same time due to the cutout in the transom for the outboard.
Liveability Wonderfull for a boat of this size. With the table down and custom v berth insert installed the v berth is huge. There is plenty of room to sleep for our family of four.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any)
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any
Other comments these boats already come with alot of standard cruising conveniences such as a traveller, roller furling and 1 set of reef points in the mainsail.many of these items are not standard on competors boats in this size range. If you plan on trailering much between lakes this boat is not your best bet.It can be done, but the mast is heavy and takes 3 adults to raise unless a mast raising system has been devised, however that was never a factory option. Also it will take a pretty big tow vehicle to saftly pull.It weighs around 5000 pounds with trailer and even though the keel is shoal it has a pretty high center of gravity on the trailer.
