Review of the Oday 34 by Chess Harris

Year built 1982
Location of boat Norfolk Naval Base, VA
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew solo
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2007
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Absolutely. Great craftsmanship, maintained so very well by the previous 3 owners. Her lines and appointments make the owners proud and committed.
Gear that's been added Chartplotter linked to the autohelm, spinnaker pole and fittings, map storage bins, new Yanmar 3GM30 with dripless shaft
Structural or complex improvements No
The boat's best features Cabin space and layout, deck layout and race-quality fittings, oversized winches and in-board tracks, visibility from the helmstation...speed in moderate winds (10-18kts)
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Portlight locks and hinges (break too easily); topping lift interior to boom and anchors at gooseneck with an interior cam - needs to be routed to the cockpit .. only key line not accessible from the cockpit.
Sailing characterisitcs Sailing the Southern Chesapeake Bay and the rivers (James, Elizabeth, York), and ICW to North Carolina. Am a solo sailor; the double reef, 2 extra spinnaker halyards, and interior uphaul-downhaul set-up is nice. She sails well with little effort, and holds line well through the 4' seas we have very often in the Southern Chesapeake
Motoring characterisitcs With new Yanmar and clean bottom she motors and turns very well!
Liveability Superb! Wife loves it, and in the end, that's all that matters to have her enjoy staying underway with me. Could use better dry storage for larger inventories, but OK for up to a week's worth of stuff. Water is hot, propone stove/oven work great, and refrig stays cold. The boat's our mobile condo...and fun time get-away!
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) [builder]
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Boat direct from prior owner ...
Other comments Superb boat. We're a seasoned coastal sailing team (wife and me)... and absolutely love the spaciousness, hardware, at-home accommodations, and entertaining opportunity on our O-34.
