Review of the Oday Mariner by Stephen T. Bresnock

Year built 1978
Location of boat Amissville, Virginia
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength less than 10 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1997
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. It's a great boat. I don't have a great deal of sailing experience (probably still considered a novice)and this boat has been the ideal size for me to learn and grow in sailing. It feels very stable and the cockpit has plenty of room to move around without feeling crowded.
Gear that's been added Just a couple of swivel blocks to run the jib and main sheets to the cockpit.
Structural or complex improvements NO.
The boat's best features It's not overwhelming to operate/sail. Comfortable and enough for for a full day of sailing and/or anchoring for a couple of hours for sun and fun in the water with my wife and kids or a couple of friends.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Additional maintenance appears to be my biggest problem right now. It's in need of a paint job, work on the rub rail, teak and doing something with the cabin. There is carpet on the walls of the cabin. Want to take it off but don't know what to replace it with. Don't know how to go about repainting it and would like to install running and cabin lights - don't know how or where to begin.
Sailing characterisitcs Fun sailing, really gets my adrenaline going. Had a great day 8-10 knots with the kids remained stable not much lean and didn't scare the kids !!! My youngest daughter really enjoys being out on it.
Motoring characterisitcs 7hp for getting in and out of docking areas. Nice to have especially when you've lost the wind for the afetrnoon.
Liveability I find it comfortable and fun. Would like to improve the cabin for weekend sailing and sleeping.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) [builder]
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Bought from a private owner. Nice person to deal with.
Other comments Like I stated earlier I want to make some upgrades and improvements but don't know how or where to start. I'm looking for some good resources to use. I'm handy and would prefere to do as much of the work myself (budget). Any help/information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
