Review of the Oday 222 by Rod Atkinson

Year built 1988
Location of boat Harkers Island, NC
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2004
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. The boat handles the conditions very well, moderate winds and waves, shallow water and two kids and two adults.
Gear that's been added The boat has vhf, stereo, Raymarine st 40 bidata depth and speed. Installed a tiller tamer and a sheet bag in the cockpit. Just purchased new sails from Neil Pryde. I installed a tohatsu 8 four stroke with electric starting and charging to keep the battery up on long trips.
Structural or complex improvements
The boat's best features The sailing charactistics and the overall design of the boat. The interior is well spaced for a boat of this size.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The only problem I have had was with the stock furling unit. It didn't perform well in higher winds. I replaced it with a Scheafer snapfurl and been pleased ever since.
Sailing characterisitcs Light winds and waves to 35 knot winds and 3 to 4 foot waves in coastal North Carolina. The boat handles it all very well. Light winds would be better if boat was equiped with a spinnikar, but does resonably well with jib poled out.
Motoring characterisitcs 8hp four stroke pushes the boat to hull speed with about 1\4 throttle in light conditions and burns around a gallon of gas in 3 to 4 hours of running.
Liveability
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any)
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any
