Review of the Oday 28 by Shawn Passeri

Year built 1980
Location of boat San Francisco, Ca
The boat is sailed on Open ocean
How the boat is used Multi-week coastal cruising
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2004
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes I would Althea had been in fresh water for 25 years she is fresh and never raced. Engine had 287 original hr. on it.
Gear that's been added Radar, inside and cockpit GPS chartploter, new vhf with cockpit remote, icom floating haldheld, Ray Marine ST2000 and ST100 autopilots, Sailomat601 wind vane, Furuno Navtex, Epirb, Wind/speed indicator, Katadyne watermaker,Weaco refrigeration, 4 6vt batteries, seperate starting battiers, Link 10 meter, custom electrical panel, lewmar windless, twin bow rollers, delta fast 22 lb anchor on 250 of chain, 16 lb bruce on 50' chain and 200' of 1/2 in braided anchor line, 13 lb hs danforth stearn anchor with 20 ' chain and 200' of 7/16 rode, 13 lb hs danforth with 25' chain and 250' of 1/2 rode, solar panels, custom s/s panel tower on transom with outboard lift, dodger with cockpit shade attachment, mainsheet traveler on cabin top, new interior cushions, new stove, new toilet, interior lights, new pressure water to galley and head, additional water tank
Structural or complex improvements Had to stiffen the transom to accept the wind vane, had to replace the standing rigging, had to reseal all fittings on the deck, new opening ports in v-berth, made galley a u shaped design for better safety, reinsulate ice box, replace all the hoses
The boat's best features The size of the interior is unmatched. even with the addition to the galley i have more room tham most 30 footers, keel stepped mast help with the dispersment of the static loads
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Running wires from the custom switch panel to the engine compartment. Had to make a new hatch under the v-berth to be able to work on the holding tank and for more storage
Sailing characterisitcs I have a roller furler with a 135% and a Storm 95%. for light airs i have a gennaker. The main is a Pineapple Offshore main with 2 reefs and full battens, also a 100 sq ft trysail. She sails well. I have learned anything winds over 20mph put the second reef in main and the 95% she chugs at any wind position. The electronic and wind vane sail the boat well. The wind vane is the best thing I bought so far.
Motoring characterisitcs Althea is equipted with a universal 11 hp diesel, with the boat loaded she gets about 5 knts. at 3/4 gl an hr. Two bladed prop in reverse is not the best
Liveability I can easily live on Althea I have spent nonths at a time on her and she is comfortable.I have everything but a shower and thats in the making. Im taking althea on a 2 year cruise to the Caribbean she will be fine.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any)
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Private Sale
Other comments I have spent $20,000 to get Althea to this point. I would not change a thing. This boat I can handle myself in any condition, but will have help for my trip
