Review of the Oday 27 by Andrew

Year built 1976
Location of boat Lake Mead, NV
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2008
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. It was an affordable introduction to nice sized boat and I have not had any major down time since buying her.
Gear that's been added New stero was installed by the previous owner. I added some equipment to run the halyards back to the cockpit a couple months after buying it and have loved not having to leave the cockpit
Structural or complex improvements The standing rigging was pretty soft and it worried me to see the deck bow on the windward side. I drilled a whole bunch of holes and and injected penetrating epoxy into the powdered wood and now she is hard as a rock. Maybe only $100 in materials and a couple afternoons.
The boat's best features She is a boat that has been ready to sail everytime I go out there and because she has been around a while she knows how to get me back to the silp safely and doesn't even complain when I put a "rookie stripe" down her side with the rubber dock liners.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Just the standing rigging, but that seems to be fixed for now. The idle set screw on the Atomic 4 can do wonders in how the engine runs, a half a turn solved all my issues with the engine dying on me at low RPM.
Sailing characterisitcs Very stabil, I take her out in 30+ winds and try to bury her rail without success.
Motoring characterisitcs No real issues, idle set screw adjsutments, frequent oil changes, and new spark plugs every 6 months and she fires up every time I push the button.
Liveability I have had 4 people out on it for many overnight trips and as long as you are all friends there is plenty of room for sleeping. I am 6'3" so my only complaint is not enough head room. Also, I put a garbage bag in the ice box to keep the empty booze bottles and garbage from leaking out in the living quarters. I just use an ice chest for food because everything is a little more in reach that way.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any)
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any private purchase. A check and a handshake.
Other comments She has been great. An older boat allowed me to get into it for a reasonable price, but she was built with enough quality that even at 34 years old she is still reliably getting me out (and back in from) the water.
