Review of the Oday 22 by nick nappi

Year built 1973
Location of boat Cross Lake NY
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2010
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes I would. I would look a little closer and make a better negotiation. The boat is very well suited to the lake I sail it on.
Gear that's been added I replaced the main and jib. I added a compass.
Structural or complex improvements Not yet, I may have to do something with the mast step as seems to be sinking a little.
The boat's best features It is a great boat for sailing on the lake. I have been out in 15-20kt winds and though there is a lot of weather helm, reefing the main lessens this. I keep the boat at a slip at the marina and have spent a lot of weekends on the boat and although it is like camping in a hardtop tent it is very comfortable. It is a great boat for singlehanding sailing or with 2 or 3 people aboard.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The mast step may have to be reinforced. I had to repalce 2 turnbuckles.
Sailing characterisitcs The boat is no speed demon but when sailing with a few Catalina 22s I can easily keep up. It seems to go well to windward in spite of the stubby keel and no centerboard. The boat is easy to sail single handed and very well mannered. Sailing this boat is a lot of fun.
Motoring characterisitcs I have a 1994 8hp Mercury and does a good job. I was only becalmed a few times and when I had to use the motor to get back, about 3 miles, it did a great job.
Liveability I have no problem staying on the boat for weekends or long weekends, but then again I am a tent camper. It is comfortable to stay aboard even when the wind is blowing and there is a heavy chop. Only a few very minor water leaks from the windows but only is a very heavy wind blown rain.I have a porta-potti and a cooler that fits nicely under the space under the rear of the cabin. It is nice to have the sink for cleaning up and it is a simple system with minimal maintenance required. The door to separate the foward berth and the porta-potti from the rest of the cabin is a nice touch.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any)
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any I bought the boat from a private owner who sailed her for 20 years.
Other comments This is a great boat, either for a first boat or for an old sailer like me who wanted to get back into sailing after about 20 years. I have taught my 2 adult children to sail in this boat and it is a good trainer. Any of my non-sailer friends I have taken sailing in this boat have really enjoyed the experiance.
