Review of the Oday Widgeon by Vic Schaefferkoetter

Year built 1974
Location of boat Rolla, Missouri
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew solo
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in Indi
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes I would. I found it on craigslist and it had been setting for several years. The owner had never put the boat in the water. It was dirty, horribly dirty, but the goodness underneath the dirt showed through. Sails were filthy but after a good cleaning I was surprised at how clean they came out and how crisp they were. For $200.00 for boat & trailer, definitely a yes!
Gear that's been added Not yet.
Structural or complex improvements No, none likely
The boat's best features Ease of setting up and getting on the water quickly. I sail it mostly evenings and occasionally on weekends so time can be of the essence. For solo, it's comfortable and easy to singlehand.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. None to date.
Sailing characterisitcs As others have said, doesn't point well. On the inland lakes and conditions I sail I believe the boat to be quite stable. Tacks quickly, I believe in it's own length! Mainsheet seems sluggish to respond but that may be a good thing.
Motoring characterisitcs None
Liveability Not likely on a 12 ft. boat!
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Not applicable
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any N/A
Other comments I bought the boat for sailing on the local lakes as it's a 3 hour drive to our bigger boat and for $200.00 I didn't think I could go wrong. It is admirable for the purpose I bought it for. Fun little boat and would be great for teaching.
