Review of the Oday 27 by 25yearslater

Year built 1976
Location of boat Oak Orchard/Point Breeze NY
The boat is sailed on The Great Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2010
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Definately
Gear that's been added Hank on jibs and Asymetric Spinnaker
Structural or complex improvements Performed a complete restoration prior to launching.
The boat's best features Responsive without being unstable.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Havent found it yet.
Sailing characterisitcs Tender up until about 15 degrees of heel then get ready to have it lock in and take off. Rig is well balanced to the point of being self steering with the correct sail choices. Capable of pushing through a chop due to its heavy weight without the associated spray common with the plumb bow featured on newer boats. A little more bouncy with the reserve buoyancy up front but a reasonable tradeoff in cold water. The boat is extremely responsive to tiller input and can make it difficult for new sailors to master steady courses.
Motoring characterisitcs The old Atomic 4 is simplicity and pushes the boat at or above theoretical hullspeed but there is a good deal of effort required to hold course due to excessive P factor (prop walk) with the engine angle being rather steep.
Liveability This boat would be quite acceptable for short periods for a family of a week but could become cramped beyond that. Two persons would be ideal for extended cruising.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any)
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any RCR Yachts was extremely helpful throughout the transaction and arrangement of transportation.
Other comments This is the particular boat I have wanted for decades and I havent been disappointed. Exciting enough for the experienced sailor and forgiving enough for the novice.
