Review of the Oday 26 by MaritimeOliver

Year built 1985
Location of boat Onset, MA
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew solo
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2018
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. I wanted the biggest boat I could get while still pushing it with a kicker. The logic being that I can work fine with outboards, but ones that power is below deck Im very limited in my skill set. The boat has plenty of room down below. While the cockpit isnt giant, its usually just me or me and the kids, so its not a major hassle. I usually have a few overnights each summer.
Gear that's been added Not yet, but boy do I have plans! Soon to be upgrades are: - Bringing running rigging aft for better single handing - Converting the current porti potti head to one with storage with pump-out capabilities. - I would like to add some sort of automated bilge pump, but there isnt enough room for a conventional system.
Structural or complex improvements
The boat's best features Its very spacious and makes passengers feel very safe. It is also a very dry boat.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Its a 1985, so I feel like I may need to do a little gel coat work sometime in the next few years. But nothing has given me problems. Not having the lines in the cockpit has proven to make sailing alone in questionable weather a challenge. Ive hit some rum squalls that made me lose a little composure, but the boat was safe and I managed.
Sailing characterisitcs Safe, dry, calm, fun.
Motoring characterisitcs Having a kicker - as with any other boat - means if you hit 3+ ft waves that prop is going to come out of the water for a few seconds and youre going to lose propulsion for that time.
Liveability Roomy and comfortable. The ice box is very well insulated, so a block of ice is going to last you a few days. Its a very comfortable vessel.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) N/A
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any N/A.
Other comments I really love this boat. With the upgrades I have planned, I cant imagine having another one. Its small enough that costs are low, but big enough for the random overnight. Id love to spend a full week sleeping onboard, but alas, I do have to pay the bills.
