Review of the Oday 25 by Don Evans

Year built 1976
Location of boat Lake Muskoka, Bracebridge, ON
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1986
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, its been a grand bateau. Have raised 4 kids, on and around her. She has been an important part of our family. Sometimes, I do covet the larger boats. But being trailerable and relatively inexpensive to maintain has been a bonus.
Gear that's been added Diesel-1986, all lines lead aft-1988, epoxy hull-1988, anchor sprit-1989, rudder-1991, dodger and bimini-1990, full cockpit enclosure-1996, furling headsail-1998, new main-1998, marine charger and true deep cycle house batts-2000
Structural or complex improvements
The boat's best features Room, relative stiffness, dry, hull has been problem free, neutral helm
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Poor rudder construction, centreboard mechanics poorly designed
Sailing characterisitcs Having sailed primarily on an inland lake, summer winds are either non-existant or flukey due to islands. Summer line squalls are always fun, but I try to avaoid that much fun.
Motoring characterisitcs The diesel has been the single most beneficial thing I have done to the boat. Consistant starting and dependable due to prop being submerged. Batt charging is a bonus. Can maintain 5 knots at 2500 rpm.
Liveability Always cramped when I have 2 kids and wife aboard. Extending the cockpit enclosure has added livability. With table insert and cushions I have slept in the cockpit many times. Lots of room under setees, but difficult to organize and access.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) [builder]
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any
