Review of the Oday 240 by Dan Boncher

Year built 1988
Location of boat Green Bay, Wi
The boat is sailed on The Great Lakes
How the boat is used Racing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1996
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, my brother and I bought it before we started racing. It has all the features of a day sailer or weekender that we need and the women like the enclosed head. After we started racing, we were pleasantly surprise at the performance. Downwind we hold our own very well and upwind with a wing keel we are average.
Gear that's been added We have replace the furler with a Harken flexi-furler so we could do on the water sail changes. We add Standard guages for depth, speed and wind. Last year we rigged the boat for a spinnaker. We have added a 155 and a 110 to our sail inventory and replace the main.
Structural or complex improvements No.
The boat's best features Shallow draft, and performance.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Everything seems to work okay, but because of the high cabin top, stepping the mast is a little tricky. Also, it seems the quality of the teak is suspect, but there is very little on the boat.
Sailing characterisitcs The boat does sail very well heeled over. It is better to let out the sails out a little.
Motoring characterisitcs The boat has an open transom at the outboard, so steering with the outboard and tiller give you good control.
Liveability The galley table drops to enlarge the vee berth or you can raise it completly out of the way. Sleep 2 side by side is a little tight but the length is there.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) [builder]
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any
