Review of the Oday 302 by Jim Black

Year built 1988
Location of boat Channel Islands Oxnard, California
The boat is sailed on Open ocean
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2000
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, It's a light economical cruiser that has a lot of amenities with light and a well layed out cabin.
Gear that's been added A dingy and a hand held GPS
Structural or complex improvements When I purchased the boat it was in the yard with it's keel laying on the groun beside it. The yard had removed it to repair the stub that had been damage because the rocks wouln't get out of the way. During the course of the repair, we decided that the wing keel was putting too much pressure on the three 1" bolts that held it on. We decided to build a rib cage of 3/8" steel to help spread the lateral stress off the fiberglass stub. It worked great and the keel and bolts are very tight and solid.
The boat's best features Will layed out cockpit and cabin with a lot of light intering the cabin area. If the wife likes it, I get to sail! She handles well and is pretty fast.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. I feel that the bilge could have been a little larger. The gel coat has some fractures and could have been a little heavier is some places.
Sailing characterisitcs She heads up will and sails very close to the wind
Motoring characterisitcs She pulls to port fairly strong from the prop wash and the helm is slow to respond in reverse.
Liveability The boat fits our needs very will. The aft cabin is a little cramped but a great place to store your gear.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) [builder]
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any
